Maudie Mary Finney Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Maudie Mary Finney was born in Seneth, Missouri. She passed away April 6, 2009 in McAllen,

Maudie grew up on her family’s farm in Hornersville, Missouri, helping with the chores and
working in the fields. She really did walk three miles to school in the snow.

After high school, she attended the Baptist School of Nursing, Memphis, Tennessee, where she
received her Registered Nurse degree. She began her nursing career in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
It was there that she met her future husband. They moved to McAllen in 1937.

Maudie worked as a Public Health nurse serving the rural areas of Hidalgo County. She
continued her nursing profession at McAllen Municipal Hospital serving as Assistant Director of
Nurses and then Director of Nurses, combining her administrative duties while maintaining
patient contact and nursing care. Her goal each day was to visit all of the patients in the hospital.
She was instrumental in starting the LVN program at the McAllen Municipal Hospital.

Maudie moved into school nursing with McAllen Independent School District. She ended her
career as the District’s Director of Health Services and retired in 1977.

This synopsis does not even scratch the surface of Maudie’s dedication to nursing, her
experiences in nursing or her dedication to the education of others in the profession of nursing.
